Acne is a difficult thing to have to live with. The embarrassment comes from the lingering belief that acne is caused by "being dirty" or not cleaning properly.

Acne is actually caused by hormones releasing sebum, a skin lubricator, in too great a quantity.

If pores become blocked or are too tight, the blockage results in acne. Don't worry; you have a lot of options to help you get rid of acne.

Although, acne is not caused by lack of hygiene, the first line of defence is to thoroughly clean your face at least twice a day.

Use a high quality antibacterial soap and rub in into the flesh of the skin. This will remove any oils that have accumulated on your face and remove any dirt particles from the openings of pores.

Alcohol pads are often effective in combating acne. After washing your face, simply run one of these pads across your face to remove even more sebum and dirt.

The thing to bear in mind with these products is that they can dry your skin out. If you choose to go this route due to its relatively low cost consider that you may need to also add a moisturizer to your daily routine.

The next step of acne treatments would be topical treatments of benzyl peroxide based products. These include ProActiv, as one example.

These products work by drying up the excess oil that is causing your acne symptoms. They do not cure acne, but have been shown to drastically improve the appearance of blemishes in many people.

However, for many people these solutions cause irritation, dryness and redness. For some people, the side effects are worse than the acne.

But by all means if nothing else has worked, get a trial pack of these products and see what the results are.

There are also a multitude of natural and herbal remedies available to treat acne. One of the most commonly recommended is tea tree oil.

It is a very powerful antibacterial agent, and must be diluted in water before being applied to skin.

If you do a search for home acne remedies, you can find several recipes that use tea tree oil combined with other ingredients to make solutions to fight outbreaks.

The advantage to these home-remedies is that you know exactly what you are putting on your face and the ability to experiment to find the right mix for your skin type.

If none of the above treatments have proven successful for you there are also prescription drugs available from your doctor.

Typically these are only prescribed in cases of severe acne, but talk to your doctor. Find out if you are a candidate. While these drugs are highly effective, they are also very expensive.
